Feeding Time at the Sanctuary
Mr. T enjoys his favorite meal!
White and Yellow Yam Salad – made with collards, two types of yams, walnuts and cranberries.
Mr. T is an African Spurred Tortoise also called the Sulcata Tortoise. He is a species of tortoise which inhabits the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, in Africa.
The Sulcata is the third-largest species of tortoise in the world after the Galapagos Tortoise, and Aldabra Giant Tortoise, and the largest of the mainland tortoises. They start off small and cute but grow to weights of over 75 pounds with exceptionally large individuals weighing more than 100 pounds. They do extremely well locally when given proper care.
Sulcata Tortoises are herbivores. Primarily, their diets consist of many types of grasses and plants, high in fiber and very low in protein. Flowers and other plants including cactus pads can be consumed. Feeding of fruit generally is avoided.
Sulcatas have wonderful personalities when they are kept properly. They live for decades and seemingly become quite bonded with their owners. Most will outlive their owners if given the right care. So, if by chance if you have a tortoise as a pet, plan ahead for their care if you can no longer meet their needs!
Our Mr. T has an unusual trait. He’s fed out of a 14-inch long by 4-inch high dog bowl. Because of his armor plating, he has a bit of trouble eating out of the bowl. So he puts his foot on it and tips it up to where he can stick his nose in it and eat it. Smart little guy.
