Emotional Support Animals
Leo: Hey Bentley, I’ve been hearing more and more about emotional support animals. I guess humans finally put a name to what animals have always done – provide unconditional love to their owners.
Bentley: You got that right, Leo. Any animal that provides support, well-being, comfort or aid to an individual through companionship, non-judgmental positive regard, and affection may be regarded as an emotional support animal. I think one of the key things you hit on, which is so valuable, is the unconditional love of the companion animal to its human.
Leo: Yes, unconditional love or support that animals provide simply means there aren’t any agreements on that realm of expression. That support doesn’t have to follow some preconceived notion or guideline. Also I think pet owners feel freer to express their emotions to their animals than to another human being, as their pets never judge them or think less of them.
Bentley: What it all boils down to is, no matter human or animal, all everyone wants is unconditional love and support, companionship and to not be judged for who they are. And to feel that one person or animal “got their back,” so to speak!
