Canine and Bird Couture Par Excellence
Susan Howard always wanted a dog, but her job in Medical Sales kept her traveling and made it impossible. About four years ago, she adopted her very first dog, a Chihuahua named Hayley. And she simply fell in love. Her world changed completely.
Susan has always had a way with design, she loved tiny charms as a child, tiny tea sets and Steiff dolls from Germany. So when she discovered there was an entire world of accessories for animals, she started making creations that were a continuation of the play she started in childhood. And Hayley became her model!
Yvette Ruta, of Yvette Ruta Luxury Pet Couture on Etsy became the mentor Susan was looking for. Yvette has many celebrity clients and is famous for making fabulous pet furniture covered in Swarovski crystals.
There is a huge world of dog couture that connects people all over the world. Events and fashion shows for dogs are held globally every year where celebrities and designers show off their dogs on the runway wearing fabulous creations, many of which match what the celebrity is wearing. All proceeds for these events go to charities, primarily animal rescues.
Susan’s signature style is whimsy and detail. She makes Mommy and Me hats, one for her client and one for the client’s dog. Her glittering pet sunglasses are detailed and striking and sell out quickly. And if you’ve visited Birds On The Brink recently, you will have seen the custom chapeau she made for our own Mango. Check it out here.
