From Math to Art
How does one go from teaching mathematics for years then switch to art in retirement? Jim Rowland did just that. He’s one of our mural artists for our mural wall at Birds on the Brink Sanctuary. He retired from teaching mathematics at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia in 2013 and took up art.
” I was raised on a farm in southeast Georgia and have always been fascinated by the forms and patterns found in nature, and that is the central theme of the majority of my work. Although my primary interest now is in sculpture, I also have a background in photography and am interested in working with various abstract painting techniques. My goal for the piece I completed for this project was to create something visually interesting that the birds would hopefully react to.
“My favorite person, for many reasons, is my wife, Laura, and my favorite place is our home. We are both proverbial homebodies who enjoy more than anything else the time we spend indulging our respective interests there. In addition, I have recently become a devotee of the principals embodied in the Minimalist movement and am committed to embracing a simpler way of life in order to achieve a greater focus and clarity of purpose.”
